Chosen Solution
I removed the built in superdrive, and replaced it with an SSD. I have a USB apple superdrive that i purchased a couple years ago, and it says “Apple USB SuperDrive is not supported on this mac.” I am using mojave - 10.14.2
I have not tried this my self, but see if this works for you How to make the MacBook Air SuperDrive work with any Mac (El Capitan onwards)
