I have purchased a second-hand laptop and found the BIOS is password protected? Is there a way to reset/remove BIOS password on this particular laptop? I have tried removing CMOS battery but this has no effect (I believe BIOS password is held in NVRAM on this model). HP say the only way to remove the BIOS password is to replace the motherboard which I am not willing to do as apart from being able to access the BIOS, the laptop is running fine.

You can’t… You need tools that cost more then the laptop to rewrite BIOs and then you need software versions match for firmware and INtel ME or it won’s boot plus the DMI tool. Long story short, forget about it! Return or use as is…

Just read this and it gave me a glimpse of the future of bios support from computer manufacturers. Looked pretty depressing too! HP-EliteBook-840-G2-bios-password-reset

Replace the BIOS chip, or download a dump of the BIOS chip and delete the password. I did this on a laptop HP EliteBook 820 G3.
