The pump on my Kenwood Cafe Retro machine is not working. I’m trying to check if it’s just a loose wire or if I need a new pump but am struggling to access the internals of the machine. I have removed all the screws that hold the housing in place and just need to remove the screws that hold the steam valve lever arm in place. You can see the tips of these small screws inside the housing in the image below (arrowed).
The problem is that the heads of these screws are hidden by the lever arm, as shown in the image below (approximate location of screws indicated).
I therefore need to remove the lever arm to gain access to the screws, but cannot work out how to do this. I’ve tried to lever the arm away using a flat screwdriver, and tried rotating the arm beyond its usual position to see if it will screw off, and simply tried pulling it away with brute force, but none of these approaches seem to work, or at least not before I reach a point where I feel I’m about to damage the machine. Any suggestions?
I’ve just had exactly the same problem! Probably no use to OP now, but in case anyone else can benefit I found that the chrome handle is on a very tightly fitted spline (photo attached) and the brass shaft it fits to can be unscrewed once the black plastic ring is moved away… It’s still hard to manouver everything out of the casing afterwards but possible.
