I would like to move a 1T SATA disk from one iMac to another. The receiver has a 250GB SSD disk installed already. Is it possible? It seems that there are wires missing? (I have it open now) I want to move the disk because the one/new iMac is an i7 with 2gb video card the other is just an i5 with 1gb video card. It will improve the performance. Can iMac run with the 2 discs? The are both model 2429. Update (02/17/2018)
No problem with any of them. The i7 was bought with the SSD. Here is a picture of the i7.
It appears someone has already changed the drive on the i7 as it shipped with a 1TB HDD. First question is are you having racing fan issues on the i7? Is there a temperature sensor cable going from the hard drive to the logic board on both machines?
Your system can support two drives one 3.5" HDD and one 2.5" SSD. It looks like this system was one of the rare SSD models Apple sold. As you can see the main bay is vacant. So yes you can move your HDD over. You’ll need to transfer the brackets and cables over. As for improving performance the drive its self won’t improve things that much, your switch to a better CPU will and if you add more RAM more so. The HDD will allow you to clean off space on the SSD. So you can max it out for Apps and paging scratch space depending on the apps you’re using. You’ll want to make the SSD your startup drive.
