You need to put the device in restore mode but powering it off then holding the home button and plugging in the usb cable to iTunes without releasing the home button. From there iTunes will detect an iPod in recovery mode and you can restore the iPod. WARNING: THIS DOES DELETE EVERYTHING OFF THE DEVICE
