does not recognize documents in top loader to scan. keep getting error not able to scan, copy or fax. have a macbook air OS X 10.9.5
pull the power plug and data cable off, then after pushing the power button a few times to clear inbuilt memory, reconnect all cables/power, and try again. Most times this works.

If the printer does not detect paper in the auto document feeder, then check the feed rollers for dirt that keeps the rollers from grabbing the paper, There should be a paper sensor near the pick up rollers, not to be confused with the cover closed sensors. Another thing to try, is place a document on the scanner glass. This will test if the scanner itself is working. Works well unless you are faxing, copying multipage documents.
you can also call H.P. for help they fixed mine for free. 1-800-474-6836 you’ll get this recording saying to go to the web site but just wait it will send you to somebody after awhile. then tell them whats going on and they will help you fix it
