I have a vintage Big Joe Indian Chief Drummer I have opened him up I can see a few lose springs and bits. I was hoping to have help putting him back to together and get working. He currently is doing nothing.
Over time the springs can snap as the stored kinetic energy when wound up is a lot of pressure. Some springs even when released still have a lot of energy as in the coiled spring steel motors these older toys have. The problem is without having another toy (same) to steal the parts from (assuming the parts are still good in it) you’ll need to make new ones. The coil motors are the most tricky! As you need to take the straight spring steel and coil it and fit it into the frame, it can be dangerous! If it slips it can fly out and poke you. Often the ends of the steel are bent so you need to remove the temper so you can bend the ends without loosing the rest of the bars temper. From what I learned using a pile of wet sand to hold the bar so only the very end is exposed which you can heat up with a torch to cherry red so you can then bend the end to the needed shape and quickly quench in oil to reset the temper. Light weight tension springs are often easier to replace finding them at a good hardware store. Even if its not exactly the same you often can cut the length as well and bend the ends.
