Does anyone have any idea for hacks on the old HP Printing Mailbox? This is also known as the HP A10 printer or the HP Q8061 printer. These printers were designed in 2006 for seniors to “receive” e-mail (it has a built in modem that called out to the “presto” service 5 times a day and if it “got” an e-mail, would print it out). The Presto service discontinued in September 2017. The ONLY interface on this printer is the RJ11 phone line. Does anyone know of any hacks to keep these printers alive or to make them work with a PC (somehow)? Does anyone even know if they have some kind of built in diagnostics (to at least test them)? Thanks
Unfortunately, I don’t think there are enough of these out and about for someone to take it apart and analyze it. It only has a visible RJ-11. This is a problem because there aren’t documents on if Presto used an existing phone MODEM protocol or invented something like Compuserv or AOL. The only possibility if someone had one and was able to disassemble it to see if there is a place to solder on a IEEE 1284 cable port or USB (not popular in 2006). And if so, see if there is a modern working driver that could work with this printer (2006 was the age of XP).
