I don’t have that xbox anymore but still have the motherboard with the paired optical drive and it goes against every fiber of my being to just throw it in the trash, is there something I can do to make it work again and try to recover some of the money I spent?...

By your description, it seems like there is a BIOS password on the computer, which you should be able to reset by disassembling it and taking out the CMOS battery(the little 3v coin cell on the motherboard)....

Please help! try to pull the shutter cloth in the direction of the rewind knob. You have to put one finger through the mirror case and another from behind pulling the cloth in between of the both. Do this very gently. The shutter will click and the mirror will drop....
